The aim of this programme is to provide a Certificate in Building Assessment and Fire Safety and Fire Safety, to meet a legislative and Industry need in order for students to acquire the knowledge, attributes and skills required to understand the importance of the management of waste to Health and Safety in the workplace. For those students that are not in employment and are endeavouring to upskill, this programme equips them with the practical knowledge, in meeting a legislative requirement that would add value to any work environment. This course will examine domestic and commercial construction technology and the inter-relationship between building technology, human health and environmental management. Construction defects and their impact are discussed in detail as well as optimisation principles for the indoor environment.

The course will also explore the nature, cause and control of fire. It includes a technical analysis of fire and the control strategies available to prevent fire and control its spread. Emphasis is placed on fire risk assessment methodologies available together with an appreciation of the role of human behaviour in evacuation strategies. Active and passive fire safety elements of buildings are presented together with best practice models for fire safety management. Graduates of the programme will be able to demonstrate the ability to plan the preparation and completion of interpretive reports on and reviews of a buildings fabric/components and fire safety systems and advise on and provide for the suitable management. They will be able to Lead and initiate in the planning, preparation, development and delivery of effective communication and training programmes on construction defects and their impact on the indoor environment and fire safety management strategies practices and policy amendments to manage building assessments and fire safety.

On completion of the course learners will have the capability to employ a range of transferable skills that ensure a systematic approach to decision making, auditing and problem solving in the context of the build quality, indoor environment and fire safety, preparing interpretive reports and making cost effective proposals that optimise outcomes.
