Overview

The aim of the module is to introduce participants to the study and understanding of subjects related to Criminology and the Irish criminal justice system.

Students will study;

  • The Legal System I
  • The Legal System II
  • The Basics of Democracy
  • Introduction to Criminal Law
  • Constitutional Protection
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Basics of Psychology
  • An Introduction Victimology
  • Overview of Criminology
  • Introduction to Forensic Psychology
  • Theories of Offending
  • Personal Attributes of Offenders

On completion of this programme students should;

  • Have a basic understanding of the Irish criminal justice system
  • Understand the Irish legal framework; the constitution, statutory law and case law
  • Have an awareness of the legal protections which must be afforded to every individual
  • Possess the ability to differentiate between the roles played by the Attorney General, the DPP, the Garda√≠, Solicitors, Barristers, Judges and others within the criminal justice system
  • Understand the role which sociology plays and issues surrounding social stratification
  • Outline the importance of psychology to the entire criminal justice system
