Family Support is a style of work and a wide range of activities that strengthen positive informal social networks through community based programmes and services. The main focus of these services is on early intervention aiming to promote and protect the health, well-being and rights of all children, young people and their families. At the same time, particular attention is given to those who are vulnerable or at risk. The aim of this programme is to further the education and skills of professionals with a common interest in family support.

Students will study:

  • Family Support Overview
  • Family Support Theory
  • Family Support Practice
  • Family Challenges

On completion of this programme students should be able to:

  • Critically analyse theories of Family Support
  • Critically reflect on their ethical responsibilities to clients, family members, agency and other professionals.
  • Evaluate different interventions for responding to people using a Family Support approach.
  • Analyse the impact of that family challenges pose to children and the family.
  • Recognise the value of Family Support intervention for children and families.
  • Outline practice they have been engaged in and critique the tools, resources, professional skills & interventions in relation to family support.
