The aim of this programme is to develop the student’s understanding of psychology from the perspective of atypical or abnormal development or behaviour. This programme should not be considered as a complete programme in Psychology but an introduction to the subject with an emphasis on social and community care settings.

On successful completion of this programme the learner should be able to;

  • Discuss the prevalence of psychological disorders in an Irish context
  • Describe and analyse causes/effects/interventions for psychological disorders
  • Reflect on teamwork and personal skills development through collaborative learning.
  • Apply a social construction perspective to learning disability and mental health
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions
  • Describe the incidence, causes and societal response to suicide from a psychological perspective
  • Evaluate their role in the social care team in managing challenging behaviour issues.
