What is this Programme about?

The Higher Certificate in Science in Aircraft Flight Dispatching will provide students with the knowledge and skills to carry out the roles and functions of flight dispatch. On successfully completing the Higher Certificate, students can progress to the BSc in Flight Operations programme.

Programme details

Modules have been chosen and designed based on leading industry advice and consultation and research about student and employer demand. The modules chosen are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and competencies required by the sector and includes additional academic modules linked to the aviation sector.

The core aviation syllabi come from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Flight Operations Officers/Flight Dispatchers Training Manual Doc 7192-AN/857 Part D-3 Second Edition 1998 and all ICAO annexes.

Who is this Programme for?

This programme will benefit those already working in the Aircraft Flight Dispatching / Flight Operations areas as it will provide them with the opportunity to validate their expertise with a recognised award. This programme will also attract those who wish to enter into this work area of the aviation sector.

Course Delivery

Classes are delivered using a hybrid approach involving a combination of pre-course reading, pre-recorded classes, live and onsite classes. 

Online Support

Students will have full access to a range of supports available online and through Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. These include our new online programme, PACE, which is designed to support students to access and effectively use library resources in order to complete assignments. Additional supports include an Academic Writing Centre and Maths Support Centre, freely available to all students.

Entry Requirements

Applicants under 23 years of age must meet CAO entry requirements for this programme i.e. a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects at Grade 06/H7, to include the subjects English or Irish and the subject Mathematics. In addition, applicants must present at least two subjects at grade H5.

Applicants over 23 years are defined as mature students and may apply directly for the programme.

For non-native English speakers: IELTS (5.5), TOEFL 575 (paper)/232 (computer) with TWE (5.0), TOEIC (730) or Cambridge CPE (A, B or C) and / or satisfactory performance at interview. These applications must be supported by two References completed by individuals capable of assessing the applicant’s suitability for the chosen programme.

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)

All programmes are mapped to the SETU Carlow Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy https://www.itcarlow.ie/resources/quality/quality-policies-procedures.htm and applicants who wish to apply using this route can request the specific RPL for this programme.

SETU Carlow’s RPL Policy offers clear pathways to the learner for recognition of previous learning undertaken and offer every credit to the learner in completing such learning. 

The Programme Board will be responsible for the assessment of entry standards and applications as part of any RPL Process.
