What is this Programme about?
The Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 received funding under the Government’s Human Capital Initiative: Pillar 3 initiative and will be delivered as a partnership between SETU Carlow and Dublin City University and in close collaboration with our industry partners.
Semester 1
- Advanced Manufacturing for Industry 4.0 (5 Credits) – Delivered by DCU
- Materials Selection in Sustainable Engineering Design (5 credits) - Delivered by SETU Carlow
- Work Based Project (10 Credits)
Semester 2
- Post Processing for Smart Industry (5 credits) - Delivered by SETU Carlow
- Data Analysis for Advanced Manufacturing (5 credits) – Delivered by DCU
- Work Based Project (10 Credits)
This exciting new Level 9, 30 credit programme includes 4 modules which can be applied for individually as standalone micro-credentials and include:
- Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing for Industry 4.0 (5 Credits) - Delivered by DCU
- Certificate in Materials Selection in Sustainable Engineering Design (5 credits) - Delivered by SETU Carlow
- Certificate in Post Processing for Smart Industry (5 credits) - Delivered by SETU Carlow
- Certificate in Data Analysis for Advanced Manufacturing (5 credits) – Delivered by DCU
Note: Each module can be offered as a microcredential.
Programme details
Delivered as a partnership between SETU Carlow and Dublin City University, this exciting new programme aims to:
- Connect the current technical skills of students with a primary degree in engineering or cognate physical science
- Provide the learner with the opportunity to develop a career or engage with further studies in materials and advanced manufacturing.
- Stimulate engagement with autonomous and independent learning.
- Develop a critical and problem-solving approach to materials as they are used in both common and advanced engineering applications.
- Encourage participation in a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, which will drive the educational adventure through applied experiences.
The course will link traditional and state-of-the art Industry 4.0 technologies with materials selection and sustainability, in design and manufacturing. The programme will be delivered using Blended Learning Technologies, in Virtual Learning Environments, and through Extended Reality Experiences. This will widen and enhance the existing technical skills of learners with a thorough understanding of materials in design and innovation, through applied experiences, hands-on challenges, and state-of-the-art expertise.
Special features of this programme
- The programme will be delivered in 5-week block (module) units
- Each technical module can be applied for individually as a standalone micro-credential qualification.
- Programme content will be delivered online, including project work.
- Training content will be delivered using a variety of formats including Extended/Virtual Reality, Interactive Video and Blended Learning via a Virtual Learning Environment.

Course Delivery
Classes are delivered using a hybrid approach involving a combination of pre-course reading, pre-recorded classes, live and onsite classes.
Online Support
Students will have full access to a range of supports available online and through Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. These include our new online programme, PACE, which is designed to support students to access and effectively use library resources in order to complete assignments. Additional supports include an Academic Writing Centre and Maths Support Centre, freely available to all students.

Entry Requirements
Entry to the Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 programme and the associated minor awards is via direct entry with the following requirements:
Graduates with a Level 8 Honours degree engineering or science or equivalent
or
Graduates with a Level 7 Distinction award in Engineering or Science or equivalent with a minimum 2 years relevant post qualification experience.
or
EU and International graduates whose qualifications which are in line with the Bologna agreement or the international NARIC system for Level 8 comparison. International learners must have an English Language score of 6.0 ILETS or a Duolingo score of 100.
RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)
All programmes are mapped to the SETU Carlow Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy https://www.itcarlow.ie/resources/quality/quality-policies-procedures.htm and applicants who wish to apply using this route can request the specific RPL for this programme.
SETU Carlow’s RPL Policy offers clear pathways to the learner for recognition of previous learning undertaken and offer every credit to the learner in completing such learning.
The Programme Board will be responsible for the assessment of entry standards and applications as part of any RPL Process.
