General IT Carlow FAQ

Q: Is the campus currently closed?

Yes. Following the directive of the Government, who announced on the 12th of March 2020 that higher level education institutions were to close, IT Carlow closed all of our campuses. The safety and wellbeing of our staff and student was most important.

Many staff are already working on Campus in line with public health guidelines. However we remain closed to students for the moment..

New Academic Term 2020/21

Q: When will students start college in 2020/2021?

Full Time Students
First Year Students - 28th of September
2nd, 3rd, 4th Year Students - 21st of September
Taught Postgraduate Students - 28th of September

All on-campus activity is subject to the government and public-health advice. Any changes or updates for start dates will be communicated to students through their Head of Department.

Q: What is hybrid learning?

As we commence our academic programmes in the new academic year, there will be a hybrid of on-campus activities with remote/online teaching. The exact proportion of on-campus versus online activities will be determined by the public health advice at any given time. Notwithstanding this, we remain committed to providing active learning experiences on-campus, easy access to a broad range of learning materials, and student-focused activities/supports that are designed to further strengthen our sense of community and belonging in this new environment we find ourselves in.

Q: When and how will I get information on my timetable and what will the new academic year look like for me?

Work on the timetable for 2020-21 is ongoing and it is anticipated timetables will be available in due course.

Exams and Repeat FAQ

Q: I have to repeat an exam, do I have to pay a repeat fee?
Yes, the repeat fee is €50 per subject. For further information click here
Q: How and when will the resit exams take place?
The repeat exams are scheduled for Autumn. For further information click here
Q: Will I have to sit exams at Christmas?

No, an important differentiating consideration for you is that you will not face terminal semester examinations within 12 weeks of this start date at our Institute. This is due to the unique way in how our programmes are delivered and assessed. You will have continuous assessments and assignments throughout your programme of study, allowing you to accumulate a significant percentage of your final mark prior to terminal examinations in May/June 2021.

Library FAQ

Q: Can I access Library Services and Collections remotely during closure?
While IT Carlow Libraries are closed, extensive library services continue to be available 24/7 and library staff are available to help with all your queries. To access library resources including ebooks and ejournals please check this remote library access guide. Any borrowed items due back during the closure period will not incur fines.

Student Placement and Studying Abroad FAQ

Q: Will my placement go ahead in the academic year 2020-2021?
Work placements are dependent on the public health guidelines in place at any time. We would hope to work with our employer partners to deliver placement opportunities. Where this is not possible we will put in place strategies to deal with work-based learning e.g. placement. In particular, alternate options should be specified, approved and clearly communicated.

Q: I'm returning to IT Carlow from abroad. Will I have to self-isolate when I arrive in Ireland?
Students who intend to study in IT Carlow and are arriving from abroad are required to self-isolate for 14 days as per HSE guidelines
