Dr Joseph Collins has nearly twenty years experience in higher education.
Professionally, he is the Head of Faculty of Lifelong Learning at SETU Carlow. The role is wide and varied but ultimately very rewarding as it facilitates the higher education of adults and fosters a culture of lifelong learning for personal, community and professional development. He works with different statutory, voluntary, community and industry organisations to fulfil the University’s strategic goal of “Inspiring Individuals and Transforming Society”. He is a strong advocate of lifelong learning as a means of promoting human agency for personal and collective empowerment. He has a deep interest in policy development in adult education and lifelong learning. Involvement with different communities and widening participation to non-traditional students are two areas of his work for which he has a passionate interest. Delivery of part-time programmes to students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage in higher education is one of the great privileges of his job. However, it is not enough merely to recruit students into higher education and he considers the main purpose of education is to accommodate the student’s ability to engage with their own life world and to allow the student to succeed and flourish in an array of domains.
