Dr Damien Brady obtained a PhD in Biotechnology from University of Ulster in 1997 and subsequently joined the Lab of Trinity Professor Cliona O’Farrelly to carry out postdoctoral work in the area of antimicrobial peptides. In 2000 he joined a start-up Biotechnology company based in UCD to commercialise his patented research, which was subsequently acquired by an Irish global food company. In 2003 he was offered a lectureship at University College Dublin in the Department of Industrial Microbiology. He joined Athlone Institute of Technology as a Lecturer in the Department of Life & Physical Science in 2008 and then joined the Department of Science & Health SETU Carlow in 2020.

Research Interests

Dr Brady's teaching and research are in the field of Microbiology and he has published 37 research papers and over 50 conference proceedings. To date he has supervised 9 PhD students and 2 MSc. His research is typically applied, involving collaboration between academics in both Biosciences and Materials research and focuses on microbial pathogens of medical and veterinary importance.

Dr Brady's research is strongly supportive of undergraduate programmes in particularly Microbiology, Applied Biosciences and Biopharmaceutical based modules. He is a reviewer for several academic journals and is on the Editorial Board of Biotechnology Letters.
