Irish Institutes and Technological Universities hold first ever Graduation Celebration in Canada.

On the 26th March a celebration was held at the Hilton Hotel in Toronto to mark the graduation of Canadian alumni of the Institute of Technology Carlow, Institute of Technology Sligo (Now Atlantic Technological University) and Munster Technological University – Tralee Campus.

The event was the first of its kind to be held in Canada by Irish Institutions and it was organised to mark the achievements of the graduates over the past two years during which the experience of studying in Ireland was severely curtailed by the impact of the COVID pandemic.

Over 200 graduates and guests attended on the day and the keynote address was made by Ms Linda Franklin, CEO and President of Colleges Ontario. Ms Franklin remarked on the resilience of the students who successfully completed their studies despite the challenges of various shutdowns and the pivot to online learning.

Virtual addresses were also made by Ambassador of Ireland to Canada, his Excellency Dr Eamonn McKee, President of IT Carlow Dr Patricia Mulcahy, President of IT Sligo Dr Brendan McCormack and the President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack.

Graduates were awarded degrees across a broad range of disciplines including Engineering, Science, Business, IT, Humanities and Tourism & Hospitality.
The Institutes of Technology and Technological Universities in Ireland have a long-standing relationship with the members of Colleges Ontario, enabling students to move from Canada to Ireland to complete their degree studies in just one year for Advanced Diploma holders and two years for Diploma Holders.

The ceremony was conducted by Dr Aodhmar Cadogan, Assistant Register of the Institute of Technology Sligo who was assisted by Dr Declan Doyle, Vice President of Development & Research and Mr Donal McAlister, International Affairs Manager at the Institute of Technology Carlow, Mr Patrick Lynch, International Manager at IT Sligo and Mr Cyril Gavaghan, International Student Advisor at MTU.

Also present was Mr Martin Kelly of KOM Consultants, Ontario representative of the Institutions as well as Ms Lydia Rogers and Mr Shaun Ryan, representing Enterprise Ireland who sponsored the event.
