Calling all IT Carlow (formally RTC) Alumni to get in touch and tell us your story and join our Alumni Group on LinkedIn

Institute of Technology Carlow aim to create a lifelong relationship with our alumni and encourage them to keep in touch, revisit the campus and create networks of support for each other and current students. During 2020 we were delighted to celebrate our 50th Anniversary, marking a milestone year in our history. Much to our delight as our campus re-opened to students, we were pleased to receive a visit from IT Carlow Alumni, Richard Bury, who 50 years ago this month commenced his 3rd level educational journey with IT Carlow (formally RTC) completing a certificate in Business Studies.

Richard was greeted by Institute staff and took a tour of the Institute facilities. A nostalgic journey of memories began. As we made our way to the original part of the building Richard recalls hundreds of students sitting on the floor of the now sports rehabilitation gym enjoying the band Planxty, an Irish folk music band who had just formed in January 1972, consisting initially of Christy Moore. We are not sure if we could get an audience with Christy Moore now, but you can check out a great Planxty rendition of “Follow me up to Carlow” on Spotify!

We then called into Martin Meagher, current Head of Department of Business where Richard and Martin had a chat about the RTC early days and recalled memories of those they knew in common.

The Institute’s current tag line “Start your Story at IT Carlow” definitely rings homes for Richard as he reminisces about the great time and memories he had as he started his journey in Carlow. He continued his studies completing a Diploma in Business in Athlone IT and then worked in Dublin with companies such as the Smith Motor Group and The Molloy Group. Richard is now retired and still putting his business qualification to good use as he runs his own stall selling jams and chutney in the Aughrim farmers market.

With over 50,000 alumni since our establishment in 1970, Institute of Technology Carlow’s alumni network is a growing global community and a great resource for networking and staying in touch.  Like Richard, if you would like to return to the campus or tell us your story since you started your journey with IT Carlow (RTC) join our alumni page on LinkedIn or contact
