08/11/2011
Steve Humble (aka Dr Maths) visited ITCarlow recently as part of ‘Maths Week Ireland 2011’. He gave an engaging presentation on ‘HIDDEN SECRETS FROM THE WORLD OF DR MATHS’ to two seperate audiences of junior and senior cycle students from across Carlow, Laois, Kildare and Dublin. Hidden Secrets from the World of Dr Maths explores randomness and ways in which maths can order the chaos around us. Humble delved into mathematical history to discover how maths can be used to predict the future. The very popular, fun and entertaining show uncovered the hidden maths within the students.
Humble believes that the fundamentals of mathematics can be taught via practical experiments. Having worked as a maths subject leader in various educational establishments for over 20 years, he has spent the last five years as a Senior Regional Coordinator for the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Now working as a Freelance Mathematics Consultant, he supports schools in raising their student achievement through creating a positive attitude to maths.
Students from Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach, Borris Vocational School and Colaiste Eoin Hacketstown thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and all went away with a positive attitude to maths. Organised by IT Carlow Maths Lecturer, Dr Diarmuid O’Se, the event was a great success.
