Motivating Students Through Peer and Self Assessment
Lecturer John McGarrigle recently travelled to the University of Cumbria to present a paper, at the Assessment in Higher Education Conference. John, a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education & Care in IT Carlow’s Wexford Campus, has undertaken research into Self and Peer Assessment. He found that if students concerns over fairness of marks can be managed, then self and peer assessment will provide an opportunity for students to discuss and learn further from their work.
The conference provided educators from UK, Ireland and beyond, with an excellent platform to discuss assessment in higher education and share research outcomes which will benefit third level students greatly. John is involved in developing an MA in Teaching & Learning through IT Carlow’s Teaching & Learning Centre and is continuing his research in the area of assessing students. “It was particularly pleasing to see that myself and colleagues are so well positioned in current research in teaching & learning” commented John.
