40 Kilkenny TY Students ‘Graduate’ From Institute of Technology Carlow

40 Kilkenny Transition Year (TY) students today ‘graduated’ in Youth and Community Leadership from Institute of Technology Carlow, thanks to a special partnership programme launched last year.

Transition year students from Loreto Secondary School Kilkenny and Coláiste Pobail Osraí were in celebratory form today as they received their certificates from the inaugural TY Youth and Community Leadership Programme, a collaborative initiative between Fr McGrath Family Resource Centre, Institute of Technology Carlow, Foróige and Kilkenny Recreational Sports Partnership.

Launched in 2017, the TY Youth and Community Leadership Programme was established to further enhance the experience of Transition Year students by giving them a deeper understanding of the work of and need for youth work organisations, the role they play in supporting access to opportunities for children and communities, and their impact on wider society.

Throughout the 2017/2018 academic year, 40 TY students from Loreto and Coláiste Pobail Osraí attended taster classes at Institute of Technology Carlow and participated in workshops run by IT Youth and Community Work students to explore the concepts of social justice and equality and how they translate in to life in local communities.  Foróige provided training in the planning and delivery of programmes for young people and KRSP delivered sports leadership training.

The collaboration of all the various organisations ensured the students had opportunities to discuss and explore new concepts and ideas, learnt transferable skills in leadership and facilitation, experienced working with and supporting children and developed an understanding of the work of the various bodies involved in the initiative.

Speaking after presenting the students with their certificates, David Denieffe, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Institute of Technology Carlow said, “It is very important to Institute of Technology Carlow to connect and work with local schools and communities; it is part of who we are. That is one of the reasons why we are delighted to have had the opportunity to partner with the Fr McGrath Family Resource Centre, Foróige, and KRSP on such a worthy initiative.  The TY Youth and Community Leadership Programme has proven to be a most valuable partnership and I’d like to thank the students from Loreto and Coláiste Pobail Osraí who have giving their time and energy and have impacted positively on the lives of younger children”.

Addressing the students at the graduation, Karin Todd, Children & Youth Services Manager, Fr. McGrath Family Resource Centre, said, “I hope this initiative has given  you the sense of the impact you can have on children’s lives. You did a lot more than help children with their homework. You listened and made them feel good about themselves and, from this, learning will follow.”

Majella Finnegan, Course Director of the Youth and Community Work programme at Institute of Technology Carlow added, “Through this initiative, you walked in someone else’s shoes and saw how other people live their lives. I know you all want many things from life but believe me when I say, if you have touched just one person’s life for the better, it is an unbelievable achievement”.
