IT Carlow Graduates Launch iDevice game ‘Bubble Dreams’
22/03/2011
Gavin Rooney and Orla Mitchell, two graduates from IT Carlow’s Computer Games Development degree course, have started their own game design company and are blazing into the market with their first release - Bubble Dreams.
In Bubble Dreams, players match same-coloured bubbles to collect dream energy and progress onto the next level. It requires good choices and reflexes as bad matches result in nightmares, which will wake the sleeping child in the background. Easy to learn but tricky to master, the levels are increasingly challenging and include Game Centre achievements that keep players coming back for more.
The company, Superfunplay, has 4 staff at present. In addition to Gavin and Orla, artist Eoin Rogan and game designer Wayne Imlach are focusing on a “casual gameplay style” and the plan is “to have a studio that provides entertaining games across multiple mobile devices”, says Gavin. Eoin and Wayne jointly have 30 years gaming experience in such well-known titles as Bejeweled, Peggle and Black Hawk Down. Gavin and Orla are recent IT Carlow graduates and say "The problem solving abilities that we learnt while attending IT Carlow have proved extremely valuable while working in the industry as an indie games developer."
The company name, Superfunplay, is derived from Japanese to English translation, where several English words are often required to describe a single Japanese word. Gavin says it also reflects the “bright, cheery style of our gameplay”.
Currently available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, the game can be downloaded at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bubble-dreams/id400309976?mt=8&ls=1
IT Carlow’s BSc in Computer Games Development was developed with Microsoft, the makers of the X-Box®. This is the only degree course in Gaming that Microsoft has helped to develop and given its backing to. The course includes a six-month work placement.
