ShinaAwil Shows How It’s Done

CEO of ShinAwil Productions Larry Bass was a special guest at Institute of Technology Carlow today. The producer and entrepreneur spoke to 3rd and 4th year students of TV and Media Production about his experiences in the entertainment industry and provided insight into pursuing a career in film and television production.

One of the largest and most successful independent production companies in Ireland, ShinAwil is the production powerhouse behind some of Ireland’s biggest entertainment series’ including The Apprentice, Dragons’ Den, MasterChef Ireland , The Voice of Ireland and, most recently, Dancing With The Stars. As CEO of ShinAwil, Bass relayed his extensive knowledge of the industry to students, and emphasised the importance of persistence in achieving his career goals and striving for high quality in all areas.

Larry’s visit was organised by Institute lecturer and producer Paula Mulroe. He spoke about the amount of work that goes into pitching ideas to broadcasters and how different television shows develop. His insightful talk included viewing habits, casting, creating content and plenty of anecdotal stories from across his career. A lively Q&A session saw students pose plenty of questions about routes into television production and its inner workings.

After leaving school, Larry worked a number of small jobs before returning to full time education, after which he launched ShinAwil with two friends in 1999. Within a few years,  ShinAwil was behind some of the most successful programmes in Irish television. Bass is a member of the board of directors at Screen Producers Ireland.
