RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan to visit Institute of Technology Carlow

06/10/2016

RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan will visit IT Carlow Wednesday 19th October 2016 to launch its Volunteer Day.

Volunteer Day, which kicks off at 11am in the Institute’s central building, will see local, national and international voluntary organisations showcase their work at information stands throughout the college between 11am and 3pm. Students and staff alike are being encouraged to use the opportunity to join one or more voluntary group and give back to the community.

President of IT Carlow, Dr Patricia Mulcahy said that the goal of Volunteer Day at IT Carlow is to promote volunteerism amongst the Institute’s 7,000 learners. ‘Engagement with the voluntary sector is a key part of our mission and our leadership role in the development of our region and nation.  I encourage everyone to get involved in Volunteer Day and I extend my thanks to Miriam O’Callaghan for giving us her time in promoting this worthy initiative’, commented Dr. Mulcahy.

Volunteer Day is being held in conjunction with Carlow Volunteer Centre’s (CVC) 10th anniversary.  Regina Duane from the CVC said, ‘This year the Carlow Volunteer Centre is celebrating its 10th anniversary, resulting in more volunteer stands than ever at the Volunteer Day in IT Carlow.  It’s going to be a great day”.

Information will also be available on the day regarding the Institute of Technology Carlow President’s Award, an initiative established in association with Unum and Carlow Volunteer Centre to harness, acknowledge and support the contribution that students at the Institute make to their communities - on campus, within their local community and overseas.

Miriam O’Callaghan said she is looking forward to the visit. “I know it’s a cliché, but we get so much back when we give in life.  I believe that any organisation that is encouraging students to become volunteers in their community should be welcomed, so I am really delighted and looking forward to launching Volunteer Day at Institute of Technology Carlow”, said Miriam O’Callaghan.
