Institute of Technology Carlow Academic Has Research Work Published in Prestigious Engineering Journal
06/10/2016
Engineering faculty member and engCORE researcher Dr. Darren Kavanagh is the co-author of two journal papers that have been published in the prestigious IEEE Industrial Applications Transactions, the leading peer-reviewed applied engineering research journal.
The papers investigate the effects of thermal aging on the polymeric insulation materials used in the electromagnetic coils of electric machines. Dr Kavanagh is actively growing research in the area of advanced signal processing and condition monitoring of electric machines with applications in renewable energy systems. It will lead to better understanding of the multifaceted degradation and failure modes of motors and generators. The research will also enable greater design processes and robustness within machines and prevent catastrophic failure modes occurring.
The research journal papers continue to build upon Dr. Kavanagh’s strong collaboration with the University of Oxford, since undertaking postdoctoral research there from 2012 to 2014. This work also collaborates strongly with Coventry University.
The two journal papers are entitled:
- “The Impact of Thermal Degradation on Properties of Electrical Machine Winding Insulation Material,” IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Volume: 52, Issue: 4, July/August 2016
-
“Dielectric Characteristics of Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Winding Insulation Under Thermal Aging,” IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Volume: 52, Issue: 2, March/April 2016
Dr. Kavanagh is currently accepting applications for postgraduate research (to Masters Level 9 or Ph.D. level 10). The title of this research project is called “Thermo-Mechanical Stress Analysis of Electromagnetic Coils in Electric Machines with Applications in Renewable Energy Systems”. The successful candidate would be based at engCORE and study under Dr Darren Kavanagh and Dr Dean Callaghan.
