Perfect Soccer Field Positions for IT Carlow Graduates

16/09/2014

As the new academic year begins, those who have secured a much sought after place on the IT Carlow BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) course know that hard work and dedication is paying off for those who have completed the 3 year programme to date.

Four recent graduates of the course are now working with the FAI, and others have started careers with UK clubs such as Paddy Carey, Jamie Carr and Gary Sweeney who are working in the Reading FC Academy in coaching and video analysis positions.

Graduate Karl Keogh from Dublin is now an FAI Colleges, Universities and Women’s assistant coordinator. Based in FAI Head Quarters Abbottstown, Karl is responsible for the administration of player registration, fixtures and the coordination of the leagues.

Graduates Michael Schlingermann (Mayo) and Gary Shaw (Kildare) are enjoying their work which focuses on assisting and coordinating the FAI Summer Soccer Schools - now the largest programme in the Grassroots Department of the FAI. The nationwide camps aim to provide children between the ages of 6 and 14 the opportunity to attend a week-long football-oriented summer camp over the holiday period. The camps catered for 20,000 boys and girls over the summer and Michael and Gary played an important role in the promotion, registration, customer service and monitoring of the camps. The roles allowed the graduates the opportunity to put into the practice the knowledge they gained from the many business modules included in the course such as Sports Management and Sports Marketing.

Gary Seery (Clare) graduated from the course in 2012 and is now the FAI Performance Analyst with the Women’s Senior Irish team. During Gary’s four years on the course, he made full use of the state of the art video analysis lab and gained valuable work experience with the FAI Underage Teams and Senior Womens International team.

For those who wish to continue studies after the 3 year BA Sport and Exercise Degree, graduates are eligible to progress to year 4 of the BA (Hons) Degree in Sport Management and Coaching.

IT Carlow BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) Course Leader, Paul O’Reilly commented on the increasing opportunities for graduates of the course “we have developed a number of links with organisations and companies that have seen students gain work experience and employment across America, Tanzania, South Korea, Spain, Scotland and the United Kingdom”

Ireland’s all-time leading goal scorer Robbie Keane also undertook the first stages of his UEFA Coaching Diploma alongside IT Carlow Students and plans to return to continue with his studies in the MLS off season.
