Apprenticeship accolades for SETU at the International Society of Automation Awards
10/03/2023

Congratulations to Jim Doyle, recently retired lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering at SETU’s Kilkenny Road campus, Carlow, who received the ‘Pioneer Award’ in recognition of his lifetime dedication to the Instrumentation and Electrical Instrumentation apprenticeships in Ireland.
SETU’s Phase 6 Electrical Instrumentation apprentice, Eibhilin Hennessy received the ‘Apprenticeship Award’ for notable academic and practical achievements in her trade. Eibhilin is the first ever female recipient of the award. Speaking after the awards, Eibhilin said ‘I chose to go straight from school into the Electrical Instrumentation Apprenticeship because I really liked the idea of hands-on learning on the job and theory-based learning in the college phases of the apprenticeship. I am very happy that I chose the E&I Apprenticeship – it has given me a huge amount of knowledge, practical experience and life skills which benefit me in my work as an automation engineer now and will continue to benefit me in the future’.
The International Society of Automation has 30,000 members in 95 countries. The ISA is a global, non-profit, educational organisation connecting people and ideas in automation and control. The society fosters advancement in the theory, design, manufacture and use of sensors, instruments, computers and systems for automation and control in a wide variety of applications.
As SETU continues to build on its leading position in apprenticeship programme delivery, Eddie McElheron, lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering at SETU commented “SETU has been the lead provider of higher education in instrumentation and electrical instrumentation apprenticeships throughout Ireland for over 40 years, and Jim’s award is testament to his dedication to these trades over that period. It is also fantastic to see Eibhilin receiving her award, especially with the challenges faced throughout her apprenticeship due to the Covid-19 pandemic”
