Well Played for IT Carlow and Team Ireland

17/07/2013

Congratulations to the Irish Men’s Soccer team who finished in overall fifth place at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. The team had a hard fought but eventually convincing 3 – 1 win over a very skilful Ukrainian side.  The result secured them fifth place but the underlining story is how close the Irish men’s soccer team came to winning a medal at the games. The competition was eventually won by France who were fortunate to beat the Irish lads 4-3 on penalties at the quarter final stage.

Ever since their brilliant win over host nation Russia, the local public have taken the Irish men’s football team to their hearts. During a walk in the city centre last week, the players were surrounded (mobbed is probably a better description), by fans looking to get photographs and autographs. Following the win over Ukraine, the team and management were given a standing ovation by 200-300 spectators at the game. The attached pic by Cathal Noonan gives a flavour of the new found celebrity status of the Irish players. Well done Team Ireland!
