IT Carlow team Arthur Avkhadiyev, Damien D'Arcy and Grainne Holohan, recently reached the national finals of the Health & Safety Authority's Safety in Design‚ Competition for third level students. IT Carlow had entered 4 teams in this year's competition and Arthur, Damien and Grainne won through to the finals, held in Dublin at the end of March.

The teams were initially given a brief to provide a safe solution for carrying out remedial and maintenance work to a damaged road bridge and teams in the finals were then invited to do a presentation before a judging panel in Dublin on 25th March.
Arthur Avkhadiyev from 4th civil engineering was team captain.  Damien D'Arcy, who is in his 4th year of Quantity Surveying and Grainne Holohan, who is a 3rd year Architectural Technology student, provided the crucial teamwork that got them to the finals. The team came away with a well deserved €1,000 in their pockets for their dedication to the cause of Health & Safety in construction.

The competition is aimed at undergraduate teams from construction related degree programmes in third level institutions. One of the aims of the competition is to promote inter disciplinary cooperation between different disciplines in construction related projects and this team has worked exceptionally well together to achieve this.
