What is the Course about?

This course focuses on the prevention, assessment and diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activities.

Course Structure

This course equips students with the skills to manage the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injured individuals by offering a unique blend of academic theory, practical workshops and clinical placements in the final year. Students on this course enjoy state-of-the-art facilities with an elite gym and a fully equipped dedicated rehabilitation unit.

  • Exit award: Higher Certificate in Physiology and Health Science (NFQ Level 6) after Year 2.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

  • 2H5 & 4O6/H7
  • English or Irish O6/H7
  • Mathematics O6/H7
  • Garda vetting required

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of the NFQ Level 8 are eligible to apply for the MSc in Strength and Conditioning and for
MSc/PhD research courses at SETU Carlow. They can also transfer to a wide range of taught and research postgraduate courses, nationally and internationally. A number of graduates progress to Pre-Registration Masters in Physiotherapy in Ireland and the UK.

Graduates of the Level 8 are eligible to sit:

  • The Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI) examination, successful completion of which grants the title Certified Athletic Therapist'.
  • The United States Board of Certification exam (BoC) and National Athletics Therapist Association (NATA) exam. Successful completion entitles the graduate to work in the USA as an Athletic Trainer (ATC).

What will I be able to do when I finish the course?

Graduates will be competent and effective practitioners in injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as sports nutrition and exercise prescription skills.

They can secure employment with: sports persons; amateur sports clubs and organisations in third-level institutions, sports injury clinics or with amateur and professional sporting bodies.
