Grant Information

Means-tested grant/scholarships from Local Authority or Vocational Education Committees available in 2011/2012.  The Department of Education and Science funds student support schemes as follows: Means-tested grants are available from Vocational Education Committees in 2011/12.

Where to apply

You should apply to the Vocational Education Committee in your home area for the grant if you have applied for or will be attending an approved course in an Institute of Technology for 2012/13.  Note: If you were previously in receipt of a student grant you should re-apply to the grant awarding authority who previously processed your student grant application.

Continuing Students

Student grants awarded under the student grant schemes are reviewed each year. If you held a student grant in 2011/12 and are continuing your studies on this course in the next academic year, your local authority or VEC will be in contact with you in order to renew or re-assess your student grant for 2012/13.

Copies of the Schemes and Application Forms are available from Vocational Education Committees.  The closing date for receipt of completed application forms by Local Authorities/Vocational Education Committees is normally mid August.  The grant application system is under review for 2012. Grant Rates for the 2011/2012 Academic Year

Third Level Training Grant (TLT)

All Higher Certificate (NFQ Level 6) and Degree (NFQ Level 7), courses are eligible for TLT Grants. These courses are funded by the Department of Education & Science.  Students commencing a TLT Aided course in September 2011 (first time entrants to 3rd Level) will not be required to pay any course fees. Students with TLT Maintenance Grants will be paid their grant at four weekly intervals - these grants will be subject to means testing. The means testing will be applied on the same basis as those under all other student grant schemes, including the VEC Scholarship and the Local Authority Schemes, and thus brings all such schemes into line. Students not eligible for Maintenance Grants will be required to pay a Student Contribution Fee at registration of €2000. Grant enquiries: 059 9175112.

Higher Education Grants (HEG) / VEC Scholarship Grant

HEG and VEC grants are paid by the relevant authority at the commencement of each term. As cheques arrive from the funding authority, a notification is sent to the student by e-mail. Cheques are available at the admissions office and students are obliged to collect grant payments personally and must present valid Institute identification cards. See grant rates in table above.
