What is the Course about?

The profession of Facilities Management is responsible for the provision, operation, maintenance & renewal of buildings & infrastructure within the commercial, industrial & public sectors. It is a profession that is growing in importance worldwide as organisations have a need for Facilities Managers who have the technical & leadership skill set required to professionally performance manage these buildings in the most cost effective & sustainable manner possible. There is also a demand for professionals who can manage a building’s energy consumption
efficiently and with minimal impact to the environment. The Facilities & Energy Management programme aims to provide graduates with the required skills to fulfil all of these functions.

This course has been designed with maximum flexibility in mind and provides exit points at the end of Year 2 with an award of Higher Certificate in Construction Studies (NFQ Level 6) or at the end of Year 3 with an award of BSc in Buildings & Services Management (NFQ Level 7).

What will I be able to do when I finish the course?

Graduates of the programme will work as Facilities Managers with extensive responsibilities for providing, maintaining and developing a myriad of services. These range from property strategy, space management and communications infrastructure to building maintenance, administration and contract management. Buildings and Infrastructure for the commercial, industrial and public sector areas often utilise complex building information and maintenance technology systems.  Facilities Managers will be required to operate these complex information systems to ensure the highest building performance is sustained.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of this course are qualified to progress to postgraduate opportunities in IT Carlow’s Postgraduate Research programme with which they can achieve a Higher Degree by applied research in a Built Environment related discipline.

What exemptions will I receive?

Under the Memorandum of Understanding agreed between the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), graduates from this course will meet the full academic requirements for Corporate membership of the CIOB.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate: 6 subjects at least two of which must be at Grade C3 or higher on Higher Level papers together with four subjects at Grade D3 or higher at Ordinary Level. Subjects must include English or Irish and Mathematics at Ordinary Level Grade D3 or higher.

Graduates holding a Higher Certificate OR Ordinary Degree in relevant areas are eligible to progress into this course at year three or year four respectively.

Mature Applicants will be interviewed and assessed on an individual basis.

Special Features:

Students will study manufacturing facilities management, building information modelling, maintenance and asset management systems along with condition monitoring and energy diagnostic equipment.  Students also will visit commercial and industrial facilities sites during the course to support the integrated project learning.
