Bachelor of Arts in Sport & Exercise (Rugby) CW817

What is the Course about?

The programme is a three year Level 7 BA in Sport and Exercise (Rugby). This programme is delivered by the Institute of Technology Carlow in association with Leinster Rugby and the Irish Rugby Football Union.  The overall aim of the programme is to provide an academic qualification that combines modules in Coching, Fitness, Player Development and Club Administration with a broad based business curriculum which is relevant to the development of Rugby. The programme aim is to establish a player centred programme for the National Domestic Game of Rugby which will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and competencies to pursue careers as rugby players, coaches, managers or fitness instructors. The course will give an understanding of the cross-functional nature of the business adn sport environment and will develop in students a multitude of transferable business and communication skills.

What will I be able to do when I finish the course?

Graduates can seek employment in sports related business environments.  Potential career paths include: Games Development; Sports Management; Club Development; Personal Coaching; Coaching - Fitness; Business Management.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of this course will be eligible to progress to the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Sports Management & Coaching.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Entry to this course is through the CAO - Course code CW817.  Applicants will be assessed on the basis of a combination of portfolio score and Leaving Certificate points. This portfolio will involve the submission of a detailed applicant profile which will provide information on the applicant’s playing, administration and coaching background and standard.  Applicants may be required to attend an interview and/or skills test as part of the assessment of their portfolio.

Minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirements:

Leaving Certificate: Five subjects at Ordinary level D3 or better. Subjects must include English or Irish at Ordinary level D3 or better.  There is no Mathematics requirement.

Mature applicants will be interviewed and assessed on an individual basis but must submit a portfolio prior to attending for interview.

Special Features

IT Carlow run this course in association with Leinster Rugby and the IRFU. Leinster Rugby and the IRFU provide the tuition on the player development and coaching modules of the course.

Portfolios will be sent to all applicants in early March.  Completed portfolios should be returned ONLY to the Department of Sport Media and Marketing in IT Carlow.  The form available here may be used for practice.  Make sure to follow the instructions carefully when completing the portfolio form.
