08/03/2016

Irish Sports Stars Awarded Scholarships - Some of Ireland’s most talented young sports stars today received another accolade through the receipt of elite sports scholarships from Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow).

Ireland’s fastest man Marcus Lawler, Women’s RBS 6 Nations rugby forward Ciara Cooney, Waterford  Hurling All-Star nominee Colin Dunford, Republic of Ireland Senior Women’s Soccer Internationals Rachel Graham and Claire O’Riordan and basketball ace Jason Killeen, all of whom are students at IT Carlow, were recognised for their huge contribution to sport. Their scholarships include a bursary, support and mentoring, injury rehabilitation, strength and conditioning support, high performance coaching and access to IT Carlow’s renowned sports facilities.

The Institute awarded 81 gold and elite sports scholarships for the 2015/2016 academic year to students who have distinguished themselves through their exceptional sporting ability.

The number of scholarships offered to students has more than doubled since the programme was introduced in 1999, reflecting IT Carlow’s status as one of the leading higher education institutions in Ireland and a modern hub for sporting excellence with an extensive portfolio of sports degree and higher degree programmes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of IT Carlow, congratulated those receiving scholarships and in her address said, “Talent, application, determination, belief and persistence are necessary to succeed at this level in sport, together with leadership abilities.  These attributes and abilities shape society and are present in abundance in the Sports Scholarship recipients we are honouring today.”

IT Carlow consistently features highly in the CAO first preferences for Institutes of Technology, which sees an annual average of 12,000 students apply for 70 courses via the CAO. Since its founding in 1970, IT Carlow has generated more than 45,000 graduates. It currently ranks as the fourth largest of Ireland’s 14 Institutes with 7,000 enrolments.
