IT Carlow has signed formal agreements with Further Education (FE) providers in Carlow and Wexford to ensure greater access to Higher Education.

Memoranda of Agreement signed with Carlow Institute of Further Education and Wexford Vocational College will, from herein, allow students in both FE colleges “enhanced progression” into Higher Education programmes at the Institute via a defined IT Carlow transition to Higher Education initiative. The initiative will allow access to courses in Science, Business, Engineering, Humanities and Computing in both the Carlow and Wexford campuses.

The agreement reflects the National Strategy for Higher Education’s vision for improved links from Further Education to Higher Education and IT Carlow’s own strategic commitments to providing greater access to and easing the transition to Higher Education.

“Over 25% of our current first-year intake came from Further Education backgrounds so this formal agreement between IT Carlow and Carlow Institute of Further Education and Wexford Vocational College builds on this to ensure even greater opportunities and assistance for students in the pathway from Further Education to Higher Education”, commented Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President, IT Carlow.

Ms. Eimear Ryan, Principal of Wexford Vocational College welcomed the signing: “As a provider of Further Education courses to school leavers and mature students we at Wexford Vocational College are delighted with these new links to IT Carlow. We support many of our learners to make the choice to progress to Higher Education and this provides a unique pathway from our PLC courses into several courses at IT Carlow – both in Wexford and Carlow”.

Since its founding in 1970, IT Carlow has generated more than 40,000 graduates. It currently ranks as the 4th largest of Ireland’s 14 Institutes with almost 7,000 enrolments. IT Carlow is the Sunday Times 2014 Institute of Technology of the Year.
