Statement by Jan O’Sullivan, TD Minister for Education and Skills

The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan TD, has welcomed confirmation that the Governing Bodies of Waterford IT and IT Carlow have signed off on a Memorandum of Agreement in relation to Governance and Management Structures which will underpin their efforts to develop a Technological University of the South East.

In a meeting with Minister O’Sullivan and Minister Howlin on 25th September, the Presidents of both institutions made a commitment that their joint Business Plan would be completed around the end of this year, and submitted to an International Panel for approval.  Minister O’Sullivan has today reiterated her expectation that this timetable must be met, and encouraged both institutions to refocus their efforts on this process.

It remains the intention of this Government to see the creation of a Technological University in the South-East.  The criteria for designation as a Technological University must be reached for that to happen.  Other institutions are showing clear progress in moving towards merger, and towards reaching the published criteria.  Both Waterford and Carlow must focus all of their efforts on doing likewise.
