Strong IT Carlow presence in the Ireland Colleges Soccer squad line out

22/04/2013

It was a proud day for IT Carlow as 7 of the BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) students lined out for the ‘Ireland Colleges’ squad against Scotland recently. The Irish squad (selected by Danny Crowley) drew 1-1 in a nail biting 90 minutes with Scotland at Forfar Athletic, Scotland. Scotland took the lead after 26 minutes but Ireland got a deserved equaliser after a period of sustained pressure in the 79th minute when IT Carlow students Andy Mulligan and Ray Foy combined with Foy finishing well from a Mulligan cross. The team will go on to participate in the World University Games in Kazan, Russia in July.

Demand for a place on the FAI affiliated BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) course at IT Carlow is evident with each year bringing more applications to this unique course. Speaking about the success of the course and those coming through it, BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) Course Leader Paul O’Reilly said ‘’The quality of the students coming through the course is of the highest calibre, in addition to the 7 students selected to the Ireland Colleges squad we currently have graduates like Danny Ledwith (Shamrock Rovers) and Shane Tracy (Limerick FC) impressing in the LOI Premier Division. It is a professional environment in IT Carlow for aspiring players and coaches to play and train on a daily basis while studying for a degree qualification’’
