Sporting Excellence

Sporting Excellence at IT Carlow

IT Carlow has established itself as a centre of sporting excellence within the South East regions as a result of heavy investment in the development of state-of-the-art sports facilities.  The new Centre was officialy opened in 2012 and the sports facilities are part of an overall expansion of the student services area.  These new enhanced facilities are some of the best equipped centres for strength, conditioning, fitness and sport and provide the ideal training ground for the elite athlete, college teams and the recreational user to enjoy the develop their sport.  The facilities include: Multi-purpose sports hall; Health & fitness suite, with sauna-steam rooms; High performance strength & conditioning gym; Exercise studio; Activity rooms, Spinning room; Rehabilitation therapy clinic; Sports science laboratories.

The external grounds have been developed to include two full size sand based flood lit Gaelic Football and Rugby pitches and a full size flood lit 4G Soccer Pitch as well as all-weather 5 aside/7 aside pitches and a 150mt tartan sprint track. The developments also include an ultra-modern 660 seater viewing stadium and a 250 seater viewing stand to showcase the weekly inter colleges and Leinster League rugby matches.

IT Carlow has an extensive and long established sports programme, and prides itself on its involvement in both the recreational and the competitive aspects of sport. There is a huge diversity of activity among the many Sports Clubs - which include Gaelic Games, Soccer, Rugby, Badminton, Volleyball, Hillwalking, Basketball, Martial Arts, Fencing, Athletics, Boxing, Dance and many more.

Elite Sport

Elite Sport at IT Carlow focuses on two specific areas:

  1. Delivery of Sports Programmes in GAA, Rugby and Soccer, in association  with Comhairle Laighean and the GAA., Leinster Rugby & IRFU; FAI.
  2. Elite Athlete Support Programme.

Elite Athlete Support Programme

The Elite Athlete Support Programme at IT Carlow is designed specifically for students who wish to compete and succeed at the highest sporting level while pursuing a course of academic study. The programme supports high calibre athletes striving for sporting success, while providing the opportunity to reach their maximum potential both in their sport and in their academic careers.  The development of the following areas are key to the programmes success.

 High Performance Gym

The EPG is an integral part of sport at IT Carlow.  In its new home in the newly developed Student Services Centre, the HPG is designed to assist and develop elite athletes and provide effective programmes for their training needs. The state of the art equipment includes the best strength and conditioning equipment from SAMSON USA and includes, Squat Racks; Cages; Platforms; Free Weights; TRX Suspension Trainers and much more…

Coaching

The provision and access to high level coaching is key to the development of the athlete and here at IT Carlow every effort is made to ensure that strength and conditioning specialists work alongside sports specific coaches to optimise the training benefits for our individual and team athletes. A key element to our Sports Specific courses is the association with the Governing Bodies of Sport (GAA, IRFU, FAI) who provide player development and coach education modules to our students.
