What is the Course about?

Business touches almost every aspect of modern human society and careers in business are diverse and often highly paid. At undergraduate level students can gain a foundation in many aspects of the business world, before choosing a specialisation.

This two-year certificate programme provides an academic qualification for anyone interested in a career in business and management. The Higher Certificate in Business equips students with a broad skill-base, ensuring graduates will have a wide range of career options. The programme provides students with a basic business foundation covering core subjects such as: financial accounting; economics; management; marketing and law.

  • Graduates of this programme have a wide selection of business related Level 7 and Level 8 programmes to choose from at either the Wexford or Carlow campus.
  • Strong emphasis on Information Technology and Digital Media.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of the certificate programme will be eligible to progress to Year 3 of the Bachelor of Business (Level 7 or Level 8) programmes (CW018/CW037) and can chose a speciality in Business or Digital Marketing at IT Carlow Wexford campus. Graduates will be eligible to progress to Year 3 of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) programme (CW908) at the Carlow campus and can choose a speciality from one of the following: Marketing (MKT) International Business (INT); Supply Chain Management (SCM); Accounting and Finance (FAC) or Management (BMT) or Human Resource Management (HRM).  Graduates can also progress to Year 2 of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Accounting (CW948).

What will I be able to do when I finish the course?

At certificate level, graduates will be qualified to work as: trainee manager; personal assistant; accounts assistant; customer services assistant; bank official; sales representative and other similar roles. 

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate:

  • 5 subjects at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.

Subjects required:

  • English or Irish at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.
  • Mathematics at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.

Mature applicants will be assessed on an individual basis and may be interviewed.
