What is the Course about?

The field of sports management and coaching is changing rapidly. Professional sporting bodies require management and coaching staff to have an excellent understanding of their chosen sport, as well as strong business skills.

On completion of the course, students will have a detailed understanding of:

  • Player Development
  • Coach Education
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Sport Finance
  • Sport Media and Marketing

Students will also have the opportunity to take elective modules in key areas such as:

  • Performance Analysis
  • Sport Psychology
  • Adapted Physical Activity.

Course Structure

Applicants can apply for both the 3 & 4 year options via the CAO application process;

  • 4 Year, SE909 BA (Honours) Sport Management and Coaching (NFQ Level 8), and,
  • 3 Year, SE931 BA Sports Coaching and Business Management (NFQ Level 7)

Both courses run concurrently for the first three years (1 group of students)

This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in football, both playing and coaching or in the business and administration side of sport. It is open to students of all playing and coaching abilities - not just elite athletes and coaches.

Special Features:

  • FAI; This is the only degree course delivered in Ireland in partnership with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). This provides students with access and opportunities to Advanced Coach Education licences (Uefa B), FAI mentors and practical based coaching and work placement opportunities in multiple FAI departments.
  • Train - Play - Coach - Study; This programme enables students to continue to train and play the game, while developing and gaining qualifications as a coach alongside studying to attain a degree qualification. There is a large practical component to the programme with students active in 3 - 6 sessions per week, as part of Fitness Testing, Analysis, S&C, Player Development and Coach Education modules.
  • Work Placement; students have the option to undertake a 10 - 12 week, full time Work Placement in Semester 2 of year 3 of the programme. Providing an opportunity for students to get invaluable experience and hands-on practise in the industry. This work placement can be completed in Ireland or overseas.
  • Advanced Coach Education; students will have the opportunity to attain the Uefa C and Uefa B licences while studying on the programme. The Uefa B can be taken in elective modules in year 3 or 4 of the programme.
  • Performance Analysis; students will have the opportunity to use systems and software such as NAC Sport, HUDL, Sportscode with on- and off-site access and licenses provided as part of the programme.
  • SETU Kilkenny Road Campus – Sport Centre; including elite sports gym, student gym, full size sports hall, exercise studio, spin studio, full size Fifa All Weather pitch and multiple international standard dressing rooms.
  • SETU South Sports Campus; includes six full-size playing pitches, comprising one all-weather 4G GAA pitch, one grass GAA pitch, two grass football pitches and two grass rugby pitches with 400Metre running track and supported by an analysis suite, canteen and international standard dressing rooms.
  • Student-Athlete Supports; Students on the programme have access to physio services, scholarship opportunities (Elite, Gold, Silver) and additional athlete activities (Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, Swimming).
  • SETU Carlow FC ‘Playing Pathways’; SETU Carlow FC field a Womens and x3 Mens, 11 -aside teams in FAI Colleges and Universities League and Cup competitions. Our Men’s and Women’s teams both compete in the Premier Divisions of their respective comps both have had multiple successes. SETU Carlow have also had over 30 student-athletes (male and female) represent Ireland at the World University Games over the last decade (Kazan 2013, Gwangju 2015, Taipei 2017, Naples 2019).

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of this course may be eligible to progress to Year 4 of the BA (Honours) Sport Management and Coaching or Year 4 of the BA (Honours) Management Practice.
